Music: ‘Stop Making Sense’ remains a perfect concert film | The Salt Lake Tribune

Many call this the best live concert film ever. I put it second in genre only to Scorsese’s Stones in “Shine A Light.”

Last night I dug out my old DVD. Ahh, Tina Weymouth on bass. And those incomparable backup singers! I could die with a smile….

Watching “Stop Making Sense” today, it’s striking how timely Talking Heads’ anxiety-driven songs are. When Byrne sings “Our president’s crazy / did you hear what he said?” (in “Making Flippy Floppy”), it takes a moment to process that he was referencing Ronald Reagan, not the current White House occupant.

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock,
We blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we’re tapping phone lines,
I know that that ain’t allowed
